String Audition Requirements:

Lakeland Youth Symphony will never turn anyone away based on audition. With our four levels of orchestras, we seek to provide a challenging and educational experience for all. Please review the playing level and audition requirements for each group below.


Playing level for each group:

Lakeland Strings (beginner): Ability to play and read notes on all four strings in First Position

Youth Ensemble (intermediate): Ability to play fluently in First Position and some playing in Third Position

Lakeland Philharmonia (intermediate): 
Violin & Viola: First- Fifth Position
Cello: First- Fourth Position
Bass: First- Fourth Position

Symphony Orchestra (advanced): 
Violin & Viola: First-Seventh Position.
Cello: First – Thumb Position.
Bass: First – Thumb Position.

Audition Requirements:

Viola: C – 2 octaves; G, D – 1 octave
Cello: C – 2 octaves; G, D, – 1 octave

Level – Middle of Suzuki Book 1

Examples: Bach – Minuet 1, 2 or 3;  The Happy Farmer OR a piece of that level.

Solo Piece:

Level at least equivalent to middle of Suzuki Book 2 and beyond. 
Beginning to shift into third position for violin and viola is desirable but not necessary, 4th pos. for cello preferred

Examples: Schumann, The Two Grenadiers; Boccherini, Minuet; Dvorak, Humoresque OR a piece of that level.

Violin: G – 3 octaves; B flat, D, F – 2 octaves
Viola: B flat E flat, G – 2 octaves, C – 3 octaves
Cello: D, B flat, E flat – 2 octaves

Solo Piece:

Two contrasting movements or sections of solo repertoire. These pieces demonstrate ability to play at fast and slow tempi in upper positions with rhythmic accuracy and good intonation.

Fast piece: Suzuki Book 4, Vivaldi A minor 3rd movement, m.99- downbeat of m.115

Slow piece: Suzuki Book 3, Dvorak Humoresque, m.25-m.40 in third position as fingered in the book

Audition Requirements for NEW students – Symphony Orchestra

CURRENT students in Symphony Orchestra will receive audition information from their conductor, Mr. Petko Dimitrov.

Scales:

  • Violin: G– 3 octaves; F Major – 2 octaves;  c minor – 2 octaves
  • Viola: C – 3 octaves;  Bb Major – 2 octaves;  f minor – 2 octaves
  • Cello:  C – 3 octaves;  Bb Major – 2 octaves;  f minor – 2 octaves
  • Double Bass: G – 2 octaves; A – 1 octave;  f minor -2 octaves

Solo Piece:

Students SELECT a 1-minute excerpt of a piece that demonstrates your best ability with your instrument. Faster tempi, variety of articulation, and playing in higher positions are preferred. Consult with your private instructor in January,  to ensure that you have enough time to learn the piece, both technically and musically. Advanced repertoire needs more than a few weeks of practice to learn proficiently.
