String Audition Requirements:

Lakeland Youth Symphony will never turn anyone away based on audition. With our four levels of orchestras, we seek to provide a challenging and educational experience for all. Please review the orchestra program descriptions to find which ensemble would be best for your student.

Please select group below to see scales, solos, and excerpts required for audition.

Lakeland Strings (Beginner)

Scales:

Violin: G – 2 octaves; D, C – 1 octave
Viola: C – 2 octaves; G, D – 1 octave
Cello: C – 2 octaves; G, D, – 1 octave
Double Bass: G, D, C – 1 octave

Solo Piece:

Level – Middle of Suzuki Book 1

Examples: Bach – Minuet 1, 2 or 3;  The Happy Farmer OR a piece of that level.

Sight-Reading:

Yes, a short excerpt

Prepared Excerpt:

No

Youth Ensemble (Intermediate)

Scales:

Violin: C major, Bb major, D melodic minor – 2 octaves; F- 1 octave
Viola: G – 2 octaves; F major, Bb major, D melodic minor – 1 octave
Cello: G major, D melodic minor – 2 octaves; F major, Bb major – 1 octave
Double Bass: G, D, C – 1 octave

Solo Piece:

Level at least equivalent to middle of Suzuki Book 2 and beyond.
Beginning to shift into third position for violin and viola is desirable but not necessary, 4th pos. for cello preferred

Examples: Schumann, The Two Grenadiers; Boccherini, Minuet; Dvorak, Humoresque OR a piece of that level.

Scales:  Separate bows and each note will be played as a quarter note with the quarter note = 104mmVio

Violin: Ab Major – 3 octaves, F major – 2 octaves, G Melodic Minor – 3 octaves

Viola: Ab Major – 2 octaves, F Major – 2 octaves, G Melodic Minor – 2 Octaves

Cello: Ab Major – 2 octaves, D Major – 3 octaves, G Melodic Minor – 2 octaves

Double Bass: Ab Major – 1 octave, E Major – 2 octaves; G Melodic Minor – 1 octave

Symphony Orchestra (Advanced)

Scales:  Separate bows and each note will be played as a quarter note with the quarter note = 104mm

Violin: 9 Major scales & arpeggios: D, Eb, E, F in 2 octaves; G, Ab, A, Bb, C in 3 octaves 

Viola: 9 major scales & arpeggios: G, Ab, A, Bb, in 2 octaves; C, D, Eb, E, F in 3 octaves

Cello: 9 major scales & arpeggios: G, Ab, A, Bb, in 2 octaves; C, D, Eb, E, F in 3 octaves 

Bass: 9 major scales & arpeggios: G, E, F, Ab, in 2 octaves*; A, Bb, C, D, Eb in 1 octave*

 *No octave drop

Solo Piece:

One movement from a concerto or sonata that shows your current playing ability. Conductor will choose a section from the movement.

Suggestions: Region solos, solos from or the level of Suzuki Volume 5
